How can we help?

Answers to the questions we hear most — accounts, games, coins, writing, and the occasional gremlin. Search or pick a topic.

Account & sign-in

How do I create an account?

Open Writeout on the web or in the app and choose Sign up. You can continue with Google, Apple, or an email and password. Pick a username — that's how friends find and tag you.

I can't log in.

Make sure you're signing in with the same method you signed up with — if you used “Continue with Google,” use that button rather than email and password.

For an email account, use Forgot password on the sign-in screen to reset it. If a social login fails, check you picked the right account in the Google or Apple sheet. Still stuck? Email us and include your username.

How do I change my username, display name, or avatar?

Go to your Profile, then Edit profile. You can update your display name, bio, avatar, and flair there.

How do I log out or delete my account?

Log out: Settings, then Sign out. Your account stays intact and you can sign back in anytime.

Delete account: Settings, then Delete account. This is permanent — it removes your posts, stories, and stats and stops all emails — so we'll ask you to confirm.

Playing games

What games can I play?

Writeout has a growing arcade of word games:

  • Word Duel — race a rival to guess the same hidden word.
  • Hidden Meanings — decode a phrase from a string of emojis.
  • Word Bomb — type a word containing the fragment before the fuse blows; last life wins.
  • Word Fall, Word Ladder, and Space Spellers — solo arcade games.
  • The Daily puzzle — one shared puzzle a day, with a streak.
How do I start a match?

Open the Play tab and pick a game. For head-to-head games, choose Find a match to be paired with another player (a bot jumps in if nobody's free within a few seconds), or Play a bot to start instantly.

It says a game is already open, or won't let me start a second one.

Only one live game runs at a time per account, so a match can't desync. Finish or leave your current game and you're free to start another. If you left Writeout open in another browser tab or on another device, close that game there first.

When does the Daily puzzle reset, and how does my streak work?

The Daily rolls over at midnight UTC every day — the in-game countdown shows the exact time left. Play each day to keep your streak alive; miss a day and it resets. A one-time streak “buy back” may be offered if you slip.

How do ratings and leaderboards work?

Head-to-head games (Word Duel, Hidden Meanings) use a rating that goes up when you win and down when you lose. Arcade games rank by your best score. Leaderboards can be filtered by Week, Month, or All-time.

A match won't load, or I got disconnected mid-game.

Your game lives on our servers, so reopening it from Play (or the game screen) reconnects you. Two things to know:

  • Timers keep running server-side — a dropped connection during your turn can still cost you time or a life.
  • Most games need a live connection to score, so check your internet and try again. If a match is truly stuck, leave it and start a fresh one.

Coins & Writeout+

How do I earn coins?

Coins come from playing: winning matches, beating a personal best, and clearing the Daily. Where it's available, you can also watch a short rewarded ad for a coin bonus (there's a daily cap). Your balance lives in your Wallet.

What's the difference between coins and gems?

Coins are the everyday currency you earn by playing — spend them on power-ups and cosmetics. Gems are premium and used for special items. You can hold and spend both from your Wallet.

How do I buy coins or gems?

Open your Wallet or the Shop and pick a pack. Purchases are processed securely through the App Store or Google Play — Writeout never sees your card details.

What are power-ups (Extra Life, Buy Back In)?

In-game boosts you spend coins on:

  • Extra Life / Buy Back In — continue a run after you're knocked out. The price rises each time you use it in a run, and there's a cap.
What is Writeout+?

Writeout+ is our optional membership with extra perks. Manage or cancel it anytime in your App Store or Google Play subscriptions.

Learn about Writeout+

I bought coins or gems but didn't receive them.

They normally arrive within a minute. First, fully close and reopen the app so it re-syncs your balance. If they're still missing after a few minutes, email us with your username, the time of purchase, the pack you bought, and your store receipt, and we'll sort it out.

Writing

How do I write a post or a story?

Tap the compose button (the +). Choose a quick post to share to your feed, or a story for longer creative writing. Give it a title, write, and publish.

What's a collaborative story, and how do I add a line?

Some stories are open for others to continue. Open the story and choose Add a line to write the next part — the story grows one contribution at a time.

Can I add images to a post?

Image posting is rolling out gradually. If it's enabled for you, you'll see a photo button in the composer. If you don't see it yet, it isn't available on your account or app version.

How do I share a blog post to my feed, or bookmark one?

Share to feed: in a post's controls, turn on Share to feed so it shows up for your followers. Bookmark: tap the bookmark icon on any blog post and find everything you've saved under Bookmarks.

How do I report a post, comment, or user?

Open the ••• menu on the content or profile and choose Report. For anything urgent involving safety, contact us directly too. We review reports and act on content that breaks our community rules.

Friends & feed

What's the difference between “Add friend” and “Follow”?

Add friend sends a request the other person accepts — friendship is mutual, and friends can do more together (challenges, messages). Follow is one-way: you subscribe to someone's posts without needing them to accept.

How do I accept a friend request?

Open the Friends tab and look under Requests. Tap Accept (or decline). You'll get a notification when someone adds you.

How do messages work?

Open someone's profile and choose Message, or go to your Messages inbox to see conversations. Reactions and read state are shown inline.

How do I block or unblock someone?

On the person's profile, open the ••• menu and choose Block. To unblock, go to Settings, then Blocked, and tap Unblock. Blocking stops them from messaging you and hides your activity from them.

My feed is empty or isn't updating.

Pull down to refresh first. A new or quiet feed fills up as you follow people and add friends — try Discover to find writers and players. If it still won't load, check your connection or restart the app.

Notifications & privacy

How do I turn notifications on or off?

Go to Settings, then Notifications. You can toggle them per type — likes, friend requests, game results, daily reminders, and more — so you only get what you want. Your device's system settings also need Writeout notifications allowed.

I'm not getting push notifications.

Check, in order:

  • Notifications are allowed for Writeout in your phone's system settings.
  • You're signed in, and you tapped Allow when Writeout asked for permission.
  • The specific type isn't switched off in Settings, then Notifications, in the app.
  • If you previously denied the prompt, reinstalling the app can re-trigger it.
How do I stop marketing or newsletter emails?

Use the Unsubscribe link at the bottom of any Writeout email, or manage email preferences in Settings. Unsubscribing stops marketing emails; important account emails (like security notices) may still be sent.

How is my data handled?

See our Privacy Policy for what we collect and why. Deleting your account removes your content and personal data as described there.

Troubleshooting

The app says I need to update.

We require a minimum app version so everyone's on a compatible build. Update Writeout from the App Store or Google Play, then reopen it. If the store still shows an old version, wait a few minutes and refresh.

The app is slow, stuck, or a screen looks broken.

The usual fixes, in order:

  • Force-close and reopen the app.
  • Check for an update in the store.
  • Confirm your internet connection.
  • Still broken? Reinstall — your account is tied to your login, not the device, so you won't lose anything by signing back in.
A feature disappeared or changed after an update.

Some features roll out gradually or are turned on server-side, so they can appear, move, or briefly pause independent of your app version — it may simply not be live for you yet. If you think it's an actual bug, please report it.

How do I report a bug or reach a human?

Email us with your username, device (e.g. iPhone 14, iOS 18), app version, and what happened. A screenshot or screen recording helps a lot. You can also use the Contact form.
